Communication Pathways

Communication connects us to our world. For children, lagging communication skills can have a big impact. In fact, communication delays are often linked to behavioral, social and emotional challenges. Addressing and strengthening communication skills can change the trajectory for children diagnosed with developmental delays including autism.

Assistive Technology for Learning and Living

Assistive Technology (A.T.) is any device, piece of equipment, or product that makes it easier for someone with a disability to live more independently and safely, work at a job, learn in school, get about their community or pursue play and leisure.

“For some, technology makes things easier; for others, it makes things possible.”

This quote is attributed to an IBM report that is more than two decades old.  At Pine Tree Society, we see this come alive each day.  Technology is powerful.  For people with disabilities, technology can be transformational.  Technology specifically for people with disabilities is often referred to as Assistive Technology (AT).  From complex advancements like eye tracking technology allowing for use of a computer or communication device using a mouse controlled with one’s eyes to a simple iPad app designed to help children practice their pronunciation skills, technology increases access, independence, communication, connectedness and for children, the ability to learn.

Pine Tree Society’s Demo and Loan project is funded in part through our partnership with MaineCITE.
