80 years after: Marie preston's spirit lives on
Marie Preston was the second Executive Director of Pine Tree Society – or Easter Seals as it was known then — and was instrumental in establishing Pine Tree Camp in 1945.
“It was a huge undertaking,” her son, Jim Preston, recalled. “She had to raise a lot of money and it was an enormous amount of work to get things running.”
Jim and his father, Burton Preston, worked together to get the cabins ready the first year. Most of the kids had never been away from home. They came to camp with mobility issues stemming from polio, farm accidents and other physical challenges.
When the gates opened that first year, 75 campers arrived.

BIG NEWS! THE MAINE CABIN MASTERS RENOVATED OUR RECREATION HALL
Pine Tree Camp kicks off its 80th anniversary year by revealing a secret….the Maine Cabin Masters renovated our recreation hall and theatre space!
The completed project was unveiled on the Monday, February 3 episode of Maine Cabin Masters titled “Curtains Up! Theatre for Extraordinary Campers.”
“The new space is truly incredible,” said Pine Tree Camp Director, Dawn-Willard Robinson. “They created a space where our campers can let their talents shine. They took our goals for theatre, music and arts programming and brought it to life in ways we could have never imagined.”

EARLY LEARNING CENTER ADDS NEW CLASSROOM
Pine Tree Society’s specialized preschool in Auburn has added a third classroom and additional educators to help serve more children than ever before.
The Early Learning Center supports preschoolers with significant developmental and physical needs and prepares them with the tools they need to enter kindergarten.
The new classroom increased the capacity from 36 to 48 students and is designed for children who can benefit from a smaller setting.
These preschoolers have significant needs and providing early intervention and educational programming to prepare them to enter kindergarten requires more resources and innovation than ever.
