As Speech-Language Hearing Month draws to a close, Dr. Ayris Franklin, Manager of Pine Tree Society’s Audiology Department, has five favorite books she recommends:
“These books fill me with hope. I am in awe of these authors who are sharing stories that are not traditional. Characters that are drawn with hearing aids and a person’s journey with hearing loss are not normally popular. But that does not make them less valuable. I see them as rare and precious opportunities to dive into another person’s experience. See through their eyes and walk in their shoes. Then continue in the world with an open heart and more empathy towards members of their community. A community that contains a variety of people, that have differences that you wouldn’t normally think about if there wasn’t representation like what we see in these incredible books.”
For Kids:
1) Extraordinary Jordyn and her Bionic Ears
2) Super Kena: A Girl Made Fierce with Hearing Aids
For Adults:
3) Through the Fog: Navigating life’s challenges while raising kids with hearing loss
4) Volume Control: Hearing in a Deafening World
5) How to Talk to People with Hearing Loss: what you can do to improve communication and why it works
