“I’ve been in and out of programs my whole life. I’ve had the most growth here at Pine Tree Society than anywhere else I’ve been.”

CJ is 36 years old and has been with Pine Tree Society’s Community Support program for seven years.

During that time he’s worked with staff to develop the skills he needs to maintain living independently, access medical services, and navigate the court system to become his own guardian and change his first name.

“Becoming my own guardian and legally changing my name were lifelong goals,” he said. “It’s amazing to have finally done it. These are things I never thought I’d be able to do, but I did.”

As he worked with his team to achieve these goals, another goal emerged which was to build on his skills through teaching people something he loves: Dungeons & Dragons.

Playing Dungeons & Dragons helped me with some of my own social skills and other aspects of my autism so I wanted to bring it to the community here,” he said. “The game helps with teamwork and communication. People play and have a good time without even realizing the benefits. I’m told I’m a good teacher and that I listen well. I’m glad I get to do something I love and share it with others.”

Each month, CJ facilitates several games with peers and staff. His favorite part of the experience is that Dungeons & Dragons is a game where you can do whatever you want with your character.

“In society there are a lot of no’s,” he continued. “In Dungeons & Dragons when a player asks me if they can something, it’s not a no. You are only limited to yourself and what you can come up with and create. We work together to figure that out. I get joy when there’s a lightbulb moment and someone realizes that they really can do anything. It brings them out of their shell and it’s a very fulfilling feeling.”
