Camp: More Than Just a Job

Pine Tree Camp more than just a job for Olivia: it was a turning point

What started as a summer job application ended up as a life-changing experience for Olivia and her family. Last summer, she was one of nearly twenty Maine teenagers who came together at Pine Tree Camp for Leadership in Training (LIT). This unique program provides the opportunity for teens of all abilities to work side-by-side with counselors and staff to develop leadership skills and gain hands-on work experience.

For Olivia, it was much more than just a job.

“It wasn’t just a summer job for her, it was a turning point,” her mother, Kelli, said. “She found a piece of herself she didn’t even know was missing and came home with a new set of confidence. The transformation was unbelievable.”

Olivia worked alongside mentors and peers to develop new skills and try them in action. As she helped campers explore new activities, she also had the chance to try things she’d never done before. Each activity stretched her comfort zone and built her skills and confidence.

“The creativity and structure of LIT was exactly what she needed at this point in her life,” her mother continued. “She learned how to navigate new spaces and felt like she was part of something bigger. She was safe there. She was seen there. And she felt empowered.”

Kelli also benefited as a parent.

“It meant everything to me to see her welcomed without hesitation. I had a moment of peace knowing she was in such good hands. Pine Tree Camp helped her fit in and find her real self. It wasn’t just a surface level change. The energy inside of our home shifted completely.”

This fall, back at school she’s formed new relationships with fellow students and began tutoring.

“She has a genuine concern for other peoples well being. There’s one boy she meets every day to say good morning to just in case no one else has said hello to him yet. LIT was a pivotal point in her life and she’s already planning to apply to work at camp again next summer and taking time to consider the opportunities available to her as a result of this training.”
